On April 22nd, more than a billion people around the world will take part in Earth Day celebrations – marking the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The observance comes at a critical moment in our environmental history: public education and policy leadership is needed now more than ever to combat regulatory rollbacks in the US, and to mitigate the existential threat of climate change.

Because of your continued support for our work, every day is Earth Day for Energy Vision. Over the past year, we have ramped up our public education efforts to kickstart an organic waste-to-renewable energy revolution in this country through workshops, research, reporting, and university/high school outreach.

Since the beginning of 2018, Energy Vision has met with several key New York City and State policymakers and testified at four NY City Council hearings to encourage phasing out diesel fuel use in the City’s heavy-duty fleets to help meet our important climate and clean air targets.

EV has also participated in international conferences such as the Global Methane Forum in Toronto, where leaders discussed the importance of mitigating the climate impacts from solid waste, wastewater, and agriculture.

Recognizing the critical importance of youth education and engagement, EV also hosted a workshop at the Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics in collaboration with international NGO Solar CITIES on the relationship between food waste and climate change, and the various strategies available that utilize food “waste” as a resource: redistributing edible food to feed the food insecure, and using inedible food scraps to create sustainable energy or clean fuel through the process of anaerobic digestion.

On this Earth Day (and every other day), we can each do our part to help conserve land and water, address food insecurity, promote sustainable agricultural systems, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by taking simple steps. Here are just a few tips:

  • Buy only the food you need
  • Compost your food scraps at home or at a community garden
  • Buy imperfect fruits and vegetables
  • Encourage local leaders to promote food redistribution and recycling through policy
  • Continue to support EV and other organizations working to make a difference

Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Please stay tuned for more exciting news from EV…

Thank you for your continued support!
