President Obama Releases the Clean Power Plan The Clean Power Plan, finalized this week, will cut harmful carbon pollution from the power sector that’s fueling climate change, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions from power plants by 32% below 2005 levels by the year 2030. It also promises to prevent 90,000 childhood asthma attacks and avoid up to 3,600 premature deaths each year by reducing other harmful fossil fuel related air pollution – while boosting the economy in the process. Six High-Tech Solutions to Food Waste From composting food scraps and donating excess to food banks to a new Boston supermarket selling about-to-expire foods, a lot of effort has been devoted to reducing the 1.3 billion tons of food waste that are sent to the landfill annually. To complement these low-tech efforts, several companies have turned their attention to developing new technologies to address the problem of food waste. Check out six high-tech solutions that are having an impact.
Just 10 States Account for Almost Half of the Nation’s Carbon Footprint The graphic here gives a sense of the task at hand. Put together by the World Resources Institute, it shows which states have the greatest emissions and where those emissions come from, including transport, electricity generation, and industrial causes.
Team Turns Food Waste into Usable Food Powder called FoPo A team of graduate students from Sweden’s Lund University has created a way to curb food waste by turning it into a food powder. The team that created it says it can be added to relief efforts after natural disasters or distributed to areas where fresh food and refrigeration are hard to come by.
