New York City to push for more organic recycling- Landfills around New York may soon be unburdened of thousands of tons of discarded peanuts and Cracker Jacks as the city moves to divert organic waste that’s generated in large ballparks and arenas as well as in hotels and food wholesalers.
In an announcement on Thursday (July 2), sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia began the first big wave of mandatory recycling of organic materials—food, yard waste and some soiled paper products—for stadiums seating more than 15,000 people, hotels with more than 150 rooms and food distributors with more than 20,000 square feet. Farm Waste and Animal Fats Will Help Power a United Jet- Sometime this summer, a United Airlines flight will take off from Los Angeles International Airport bound for San Francisco using fuel generated from farm waste and oils derived from animal fats.
For passengers, little will be different — the engines will still roar, the seats in economy will still be cramped — but for the airlines and the biofuels industry, the flight will represent a long-awaited milestone: the first time a domestic airline operates regular passenger flights using an alternative jet fuel. The preliminary emissions reduction targets and inventory data from governments to the Compact of States and Regions was announced on July 2 at the World Summit Climate and Territories in Lyon, France. Of particular importance are the critical UN global climate talks, set to take place in Paris later this year.
